The saddest thing about people dying....is when they are no longer remembered. tonight, I'm remembering my cousin, jeremy. he died 3 & a half years ago. 2 days after Christmas. 30 years old.
i'm in hattiesburg, ms for work right now. never been here. jeremy spent several years here getting his PhD. he was a genius. a poet. a friend to so many. i wish i could sit and talk with him. so many questions. even dumb questions.....like where he lived here. where was his favorite restaurant, his favorite place to read. did he have a favorite street here? i want to see where he lived his life here.
i have a lot of regrets. i thought jeremy was so cool when we were growing up. he played basketball & we would always play outside at my nanny's house. he taught me how to shoot the right way. we would peck songs out at the piano. walk to the end of the end of Thompson Street. Sit with George & Flora next door...I still remember the smell of their house. and of nanny's house. and her yellow bathroom.
but then something happened. we grew up... and i didn't take the chance to ask him about his life. i didnt even have his phone number. i didn't know him any more. so now, i'm in this town.....& all i want to know is what sandwich shop he liked so i can go eat there...
don't let time separate you from the people you love. and call them on their birthday.
